Body Knowledge in Medicine, Dance, Art, Society
State of the Body is an ongoing research laboratory, founded and directed by Mansoureh Aalaii and Antoine de Perrot, that explores the intersections between body knowledge, medicine, dance, art and society.
Context
Over more than five years, Mansoureh Aalaii and Antoine de Perrot have developed and led workshops that bring together medical knowledge of the body with dance and artistic practice. These workshops have been held regularly at Tanzhaus Zürich, Micadanses Paris, Pôle 164 Marseille FR, and Forum Dance Switzerland. They have also presented selected topics through performative lectures at contemporary dance festivals such as ZOA Festival in Paris.
Initially aimed for professional dancers, dance pedagogues and athletes, the workshops are now open to a broader audience, offering in-depth understanding of the human body, as well as tools for prevention and health promotion.
Content
Each workshop focuses on a specific region of the body. Drawing on anatomy, physiology, embryology, and related scientific disciplines, participants get tools to explore the role of the featured body region in movement, perception, dance and artistic practice.
The themes are continuously developed. Through this ongoing process, an increasingly nuanced exchange and a transcending of disciplinary boundaries emerge between medical knowledge, art history and artistic practice. The fields of dance and art remain largely separate from medicine and the sciences, each operating with distinct modes of thinking and methodologies. Grounded in rigorous, in-depth research, their approach constitutes an integrative initiative that fosters dialogue across these fields and contributes to broader societal reflection.
